Jim Noveral, A.S., B.S., M.S., Ph.D. has been a fitness buff since the age of 12, when he bought his first set of free weights and tried to make himself look like Arnold Schwarzenegger by exercising in his garage. He never did get to the exact point of looking as good as Arnold however the physical fitness experience and knowledge gained by this initial endeavor led to a management position in one of the first gyms on the east coast to use Nautilus machines; soon after they were invented. College drew him away from working in the gym and soon he was awarded an M.S. degree in Gerontology, and then a Ph.D. in Biology, from Drexel University. These degrees both contained theses who’s research work was performed at the University of Pennsylvania, and which centered on muscle cell physiology, cardiovascular function, and more specifically, on how the body’s ability to regulate blood pressure changes as one ages. This eventually led to a faculty position in the Medical School at The University of Pennsylvania where he ran a research lab that studied lung physiology and Asthma. His extended background is very broad, having taught courses in Gross Anatomy and Physiology, Cell Physiology, Molecular Biology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Medical Terminology and Patient Information Management… at a variety of colleges and universities including; The University of Pennsylvania, The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, West Chester University, Ursinus and Swarthmore Colleges, and The Chubb Technical Institute (He also helped run a field study course in Ecology in Costa Rica, which was a little out of the ordinary for him but exceedingly fun). Dr. J has more than 15 published original articles and/or book chapters related to aging, cardiovascular, pulmonary and muscle function, and other topics in physiology.
In addition to the above, Dr. J runs a small tutoring business where he tutors mostly high school students.
Some of Dr. J’s non-academic interests are, rock climbing, mountaineering, wind surfing, riding/building motorcycles, martial arts, meditation, kayaking and playing drums. He is a certified sky diver, scuba diver, sailor and ultra-light pilot. In all of this Dr. J maintains a rigorous fitness regime and has helped many of his colleagues with developing training programs. His interests have currently turned to personal training. Using his broad experience in the varied areas mentioned above, he is developing individualized fitness programs that will generate a level of fitness in his clients which will enable them to lead enriched lives. The training programs will be progressive and dynamic, and designed to meet an individuals needs and abilities. They will be reviewed and reconstructed as needed, as time progresses, based on the clients progress and strengths in individual areas.
“Hope to see you at the gym”
